*This is a work in progress.*
Gardening is great exercise and very rewarding. The feeling of picking something you grew and eating it same day at peak freshness is hard to beat, it also takes a lot of time. This is why I've created LeafIt. LeafIt is a system that you can use to monitor a small batch of crops and get up to date information on the status of your garden. Don't know how much you should water it? No problem, LeafIt will let you know. Is your garden getting enough light? LeafIt has both an ambient light an UV sensor to let you know. LeafIt has almost everything you need to make sure your garden is thriving so you can go on with your life and LeafIt alone (See what I did there?)
LeafIt started as a hair brained idea I had for making a roof garden at work. I got really excited and in turn got other people really excited which got management nervous because this would have cost a butt ton to put together. So after a talking to from the COO and suggestions from the CEO to make this much smaller scale I took up gardening as a hobby to have fun and do research.
I grew up in a rural part of North Jersey and my Dad had a good sized garden so I was spoiled with really fantastic fresh produce. When I moved out of Jersey in 2005 truly fresh produce became a bit tougher to come by. Eventually I would go to farmers markets to seek it out but it wasn't the same. Taking up gardening as a hobby was a fantastic idea and taking advantage of a nicely sized South Philly "back yard" with a lot of southward sun was an added bonus. While I'm not able to have a garden nearly the size of my father's I can at least have some plants around that brighten up the space and provide my wife and I with some great tasting, fresh food. LeafIt is meant to open that possibility to anyone regardless of schedules, sun, and space. If you have a couple square feet to put some buckets, you can have a great little garden to work on and harvest from. LeafIt will help out with the little things.
